Midwest Classic Cowboy Quail Hunt

We all love our cowboy guns, but let's face it, other than for cowboy action shooting, they really don't have much application in the real world. With that in mind, I had an idea. Fade back to April 2008. The 2008 Midwest Classic Cowboy Action Shoot was being held at the World Shooting Complex in Sparta, Illinois. This shoot benefits Illinois Quail Unlimited and funds are used exclusively in Illinois to propagate wildlife habitat.
The Saturday Night Banquet is comprised of a great meal, bucket raffles, silent auction and regular auction. One of the items that I had on the regular auction was a Cowboy Quail Hunt for 4 on our farm in Southern Illinois, which also included Ms. Barbara's bisques and gravy breakfast, Texas chili lunch and longhorn steaks for dinner, and, of course, adult beverages after the hunt. Ms. Laura, (Back 40's daughter) would photograph the events. Other stipulations included cowboy cloths and CAS shotguns during the hunt. The winning bidders were Newsome Porter SASS 48398 and his lovely wife, Lily Mae SASS 58002. Invited guests were Rufus Basset SASS 72750 and Smile Fixer SASS 13434. The hunt was scheduled to be held on Saturday, November 29th.
It was a near perfect day as the cowboy quail hunters arrived at the farm. Unfortunately, Rufus Basset took ill and could not make it. After a filling breakfast, each hunter was given a blaze orange hat cover for their cowboy hats and a complementary Quail Unlimited blaze orange hunting vest and one box of Winchester shells. Jim Richardson, with dog Hank, and Dennis Kern, with Tika, both from Benton Illinois and avid quail hunters, served as the dog handlers. Lily Mae and Smile Fixer selected their Winchester '97's as their gun of choice while Newsome Porter opted for a hammer double barrel with black powder shells, which proved to be quite photogenic for Ms. Laura.
The hunt began, literally, on the back 40. A combination of native prairie grasses and brushy fence rows proved to be a haven for the bobwhites. Hank was soon to lock up on point and Lily Mae was to first to score. After each ensuing dog point, the hunters took turns shooting and proved to be quite the competent wing shooters. The short barreled, open choked shotguns proved to be quite capable of downing the feathered fowl.
Time for lunch. Ms. Barbara's Texas chili hit the spot. After a brief respite, it was time for Tika to show her style. Again, each shooter displayed excellent wing shooting ability and the hunt for the day was complete. At the end of the day, each shooter claimed their limit of 8 quail each.
The evening meal consisted of longhorn steaks and all the fixings and a toast to the hunt.
The Cowboy Quail Hunt proved to be quite enjoyable for the shooters and myself. Everyone handled themselves in a safe manner and a good time was had by all.
The 2009 Midwest Classic will be held on April 24, 25, & 26th, at the World Shooting Complex in Sparta, IL. For more information, go to our website at www.midwestclassic-iqu.com
